Borrowing From the Library

Your Library Card is your passport to more than 5 million items from BCCLS libraries. This includes bestsellers, fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, magazines, audiobooks, Music CDs, DVDs, video games and more. Choose from over 130,000 items in the Bergenfield collection, and/or you can request any item in the system to be shipped to Bergenfield for you.

Effective February 14, 2020, BCCLS will automatically renew eligible items checked out to library cardholders.

How do Automatic Renewals Work?

  • Eligible items will renew automatically 3 days before their due date for the full loan period.
  • You will receive a notification via email or text if an eligible item has been renewed.
  • Notification is only via email or text, so be sure we have your current information in our system.
  • You can still renew eligible items at any time through your account at bccls.org or at any BCCLS library.

An item is NOT eligible for Auto-Renew if:

  • The item has reached its renewal limit.
  • The item is on hold for another patron.
  • Your card has expired.
  • You owe $10 or more in fines.
  • You have 10 or more items overdue.

You now have the ability to store your library card barcode onto an app like KeyRing or CardStar to use at the Check Out Desk in place of your physical card. You can go to the App Store (for iPhones) or Google Play (for Android devices) and download an app like KeyRing or CardStar to save your Bergenfield Public Library barcode on your mobile device. 

A valid library card is required to borrow all materials from the Bergenfield Library, whether presented in its physical format or as a digital representation on a smart device. Cards are free to Bergenfield residents with proper identification (current driver’s license with a Bergenfield address or 2 forms of secondary ID, phone/electric bill, lease, etc.) and may be used at all BCCLS libraries. Replacement cards are $5 (senior citizens: $1). You are responsible for items checked out on your card. Learn more or submit an online application for a Bergenfield Public Library Card.

There is no charge for new/high demand DVDs. Reserves: All items except periodicals and new/high demand DVDs may be reserved. Library materials (excluding new/high demand DVDs) may be renewed unless on reserve for other patrons.

When picking up requested items from any BCCLS library, you will need to 1) Present your library card and 2) Make sure you present the same library card that was used to request your items. Staff will not be able to charge out your item to a different card. Items that are sent from other BCCLS Libraries are held for four days; if you do not pick up the item within four days, it is sent back to the sending library.

For your convenience, the Book Return Drop and Audio Visual Drop are open 24/7 for returning items. However, there is a fine for returning audio visual materials in the Book Return Drop ($2 per DVD and 50 cents per CD).

Overdue fines are per day and max out at $10 per item.

BCCLS Libraries link materials using a default unit price for consistency and uniformity. However if an item’s actual price is more than $5 above or below default, Libraries may change the unit price to reflect the actual list price of the item.

Items not returned are in violation of Borough Ordinance #1059, and legal proceedings may be instituted. Restitution is required for all damage to, and loss of, library materials. Lost and Paid: Refunds will be made within 30 days of payment for the lost item less the $10 overdue fine.
